‘Rising from the ashes … ”wasting no time following the demise of Mad Violets in late 1984 guitarist/vocalist Dino Sorbello grabbed drummer Andrea Matthews from the recently broken up Outta Place, and Noreen Lewis on bass, then located keyboardist Bill Ebauer thru a Village Voice ad, to form BLACKLIGHT CHAMELEON(s). After a quick gig or two at The Dive they set about recording their first self-titled Ep, released on Voxx Records March 1985, which continues to sell even to this day. An article in VANITY FAIR magazine in June 1985 about the ‘big 60s resurgence’ featured a two-page color photo by none ather than Mary Ellen Mark, with some good copy about the band. Instead of a press kit, the band showed issues of the magazine around town to round up some prestigious gigs.
By 1986 after ‘the usual’ line-up changes, the band reformed around Dino & Bill and now Sharon M. on vocals, Marilyn Doherty on bass, and Mark Wolf on drums. They were featured on the cover of HIGH TIMES magazine in a story about the Mynds’ Eye psychedelic music events happening at Tramps NYC (where Joey Ramone, after seeing them said…”I was transported…”)
Spring of 1987 saw the release of ‘Inner Mission’ (USA: NBC Records, Europe : Semaphore Recs). Two tours each to Florida and California, a fair amount of US airplay on college radio, led to more shows, and quite lot of sales and airplay in Europe, though somehow managed not to tour there.
A few months after playing the Mind Circus event at Temple U. in Philadelphia during spring of 1988, the group disbanded.
Dig everything they recorded, some bonus tracks, on the Tripwave! Records CD called “A Field Guide To Blacklight Chameleons”.
